Gaining Ground
Nario scratched his sweaty head looking at the paperwork before him. Order partially filled. Ration shortage. Back-ordered. The numbers just didnt work--but did they ever at one of these backwater posts? To be honest, the Celestial Hand did a better job than most in supplying their smaller outposts and he could almost understand the upper brasss point of view on these things. He had been a quartermaster for far too long not to get such things. Sure the Empyreans needed a presence here at Freebooter Isle-- Ley Lines needed to be protected. The other factions needed to be prevented from gaining any footholds anywhere

Rollout Fiction
The scout stood outside the door preparing himself for the news he was about to deliver. It seemed that he was always the one to deliver the failings of the current mission, and feared his commander would begin associating himself with the news. It was better just to get it over with and get out of site as quickly as possible.

October, 2009: Gears of Change

Ten Years ago on November 2nd, the portals opened to Dereth! Over the years we have seen many changes come to the game we all know and love, but one thing remains the same, our love for Dereth. So in celebration of our ten years together, the Asheron's Call Team has put together a special update with some really fantastic features! Lets check out what is new and exciting in Asheron's Call!

Gears of Change
In a cavernous assembly hall constructed entirely of metal, an army was massing. They stood in neatly ordered ranks, sorted into columns by specialization and into rows by rank within their specialization. These mechanical knights were, like the homes they lived in, made entirely of metal. They were hulking, broad-shouldered, bipedal creatures sheathed in thick panels of grey armor, animated by incredibly intricate gear systems, infused with life and sentience by some ancient process.

Aliester the Loquacious, pre-eminent sage of Dereth, peered into large glass lens positioned over his work desk. In his hands he held a pair of tiny tweezers and a sharp etching tool. Atop his work desk, magnified for his aging eyes by the lens, was a small, intricate device consisting of a deep violet crystal framed within a network of delicate metal parts. The lens served as both a magnifying device and a filter to help him better see the flow of energy across parts of the crystal and its metal case of rods and gears.

September, 2009: Cogs in the Machine

Cogs in the Machine
In a roughly excavated cavern deep beneath the surface of northwestern Osteth, a Virindi ranked Master among the Apostate faction consulted with a group lower-ranked Servants who were bound to its will. The Master had received personal instructions from the shadowy Consul who directed the entire Apostate faction. It sat at the center of a circle of five Servants, turning to each to receive its report.

Rollout Fiction
Ardry ducked as another lightning bolt whizzed over his head. His armor had already absorbed too many bolts of lightning and gouts of acid conjured by the Apostate Master of this installation. Hed fought his way down here through rocky tunnels filled with giant, angry Gotrok Lugian diggers and the polished stone walls of the facility where the Apostates were conducting their latest round of arcane experiments, and the resistance had been unexpectedly tough.

Reclamation
The Virindi drifted serenely toward an assembled crowd of a dozen Lugians. The grey giants were standing in a circle around another Virindi and a large open space on the floor. All of the Lugians were members of the Gotrok, a group that had rebelled against their lords in the citadel of Linvak Tukal and had allied themselves with a renegade faction of Virindi that had been dubbed by their Isparian foes as “Apostates.”

Event Fiction
Queen Elysa paced back and forth in front of a giant map of Dereth and its surrounding islands. In one hand she clutched a rolled-up parchment, twisting it in her hands in agitation. The map itself was a marvel. It was as long on each side as a human was tall, and incredibly detailed. Lakes, forests, rivers, and mountains were all rendered perfectly and in full relief, so that one could almost feel the snow swirling around the peaks of the Linvak mountains, or smell the fetid stink coming off Blackmire Swamp.

Picking up the Pieces
Ardry swatted at his neck in irritation. The airborne insects of Moarsman Isle were always a nuisance, but they seemed to be particularly dense and active today. Hed spent years as a scout, stalking through every fetid swamp and jungle Dereth had to offer in search of the information his superiors sought, and all his long experience had done nothing to erase his revulsion for the swarming pests that seemed to make a particular point of flying into his eyes, nose, and mouth.

Rollout Fiction
The workshops in the Arcanum motherhouse had always been a bustling center of magical research and experimentation, but today they buzzed and rattled at a particular pitch, suggesting a heightened level of activity and excitement.

In the deepest chambers of the workshop level, isolated from the other rooms, behind doors guarded by royal soldiers, the renowned Sho metalsmith Koga Hideki was working on something new and exciting. A cache of artifacts had been unearthed and brought to the Arcanum for analysis, and Hideki was the first to get a good look at them. The artifacts consisted of pieces of shaped metal, obviously from some kind of technologically advanced source. There were recognizable human-like body parts in the pile arms, torsos, legs

Old Ghosts
In his cave among the northern mountains and forests of Osteth, Harlune was doing something that he had rarely done in all the years that humans had occupied Dereth. He was cleaning.

The Yalaini mage, ancient of days but still strong and energetic, bustled about his domicile with a broom and dustpan. A kettle heated up over a cookfire, and carefully prepared snacks had been laid out on a table in which Harlune, the self-titled Misanthrope, had entertained very few visitors during his long years in this isolated location.

June 2009 Rollout Fiction
The adventurers stepped over the corpses of a half-dozen Moarsmen, boasting and joking with each other at the carnage they had wrought. It was a mixed group of archers, mages, and warriors, and together they had made short work of every group they encountered on this island, leaving behind a festering pile of dead, stinking Moarsmen. They picked over the corpses for tiny shards, but curiously enough left most of the valuable, but heavy, loot behind.

Secrets of the Apostates
Magaritta du Jacquette was sitting at her desk in the Arcanums collegium of researchers, drafting a new advisory for travelers headed to Moarsman Isle, when there was a loud crash outside her door. There was the distinct sound of fragile glass breaking, and the sound of round metal things rattling around on the stone floor of the building. She sighed, put her pen down, and went to her door.

Rollout Fiction
Hiding behind a stack of crates, Adso cursed and wiped his blade off. Around him lay three dead Hea Tumeroks, whod jumped him in the tunnel leading to this room. Hed been surprised by this last rush. Either he was losing his touch with sneaking and skulking in monster-clogged dungeons, or the denizens of this particular complex were especially paranoid.

What Once was Lost
In a secluded, mist-shrouded valley somewhere in southwestern Dereth, an assassin, perhaps the greatest one living on the island, practiced his trade. Oswald was here to track down and surprise another accomplished sneak-killer. It was just the sort of challenge that he relished most, the sort of challenge he had not had in a while. He had spent a lot of time and energy in the last few years training young apprentices in field craft.

In a cavernous vault beneath Freebooters Isle, two old bandit captains sat at a table, with a pile of pyreals and trade notes between them. The two men were friends and business partners of long acquaintance, and had saved each others lives and livelihoods time after time, both on this world and on their former home of Ispar.

Who Watches the Virindi?
Behind locked doors in an underground facility that fairly thrummed with geomantic power, a creature was screaming. Its screams were endless and unearthly, terrifying even to the few flesh-and-blood servants that occupied these hidden halls. They had been present for many interrogations, but the creature they held there now was something outside of their experience, and the long-jaded minions who attended these sessions heard new and terrifying notes in the song of pain that their masters played.

Adso ducked and tumbled, rolling just out of the way of the crashing boulder. The hurtling hunk of stone shattered into shards of jagged shrapnel behind him, raising a welter of cuts on his armor and face. Ignoring the pain, he surged to his feet, into a throwing stance.

Event Fiction

The old scribe sighed in frustration and leaned back from the table. He stared at the scroll in front of him. He tried to make sense of the dense block of characters on the scroll. Scholars who had seen the original scroll all agreed that the calligraphy was so fine, so elegantly interwoven and so perfectly structured, that one could achieve enlightenment simply from looking very closely at the image of all that perfectly arrayed black ink on the paper, even if one never read the actual words written.

Ardry shivered as he cocooned himself more tightly into his bedroll. However compact he tried to make his body to preserve warmth, it didnt help. The ground beneath him was frozen and cold and it seeped right through the thin padding and fabric of the bedroll. The only thing he had to counteract it was the skin of wine he had bundled against his belly.

Teaser Fiction
Ardry crested a ridge and saw the grey, mottled hills and valleys of the Olthoi-infested lands spread out beneath him, now dusted with the long-delayed first snow of winter. For as far as the eye could see, this corner of Dereth had been taken over by the insect menace, a living artifact to the days when all of Dereths Isparian population had been enslaved by the Olthoi.

On a rugged plain crisscrossed with hills and ridges, an army of invading creatures surged through trenches between great stone towers enchanted with powerful defenses. The towers had stood against numberless waves of attacking creatures.
